Frequently Asked Questions
How deep do you need to dig for a flagpole?
For the Phoenix 20ft flagpole, dig 14" in diameter and 28" deep. For sandy or soft soil, go wider and deeper. The hole needs 4-6" of gravel at the bottom for drainage, then concrete surrounds the ground sleeve for the remaining depth.
How much concrete do I need to install a flagpole?
Four 60lb bags of pre-mix concrete is standard for the Phoenix 20ft pole. Quick-dry concrete works well and typically sets in 20-40 minutes, though we recommend waiting 24-48 hours before inserting the pole for maximum strength.
How long does flagpole installation take?
Most customers complete the full installation in 2-3 hours. Digging and setting the concrete takes about an hour. After a 24-48 hour cure time, inserting the pole and attaching the flag takes under 30 minutes. Total project time from start to flying flag: 1-2 days (most of it just waiting for concrete).
Do I need to call 811 before digging?
Yes. Always call 811 (Dig Safe / Call Before You Dig) before any digging project. This is a free service that will mark underground utility lines within 2-3 business days. It's required by law in most states and protects you from damaging gas, electric, water, or cable lines.
Can I install a flagpole without concrete?
Not recommended for permanent residential installation. Concrete anchors the ground sleeve and ensures the pole stays plumb in wind. Without it, the pole will lean or shift over time. If you need a portable or temporary setup, consider our outrigger hitch mount — no digging required.
What flag size should I fly on a 20ft flagpole?
A 3x5 American flag is the standard recommendation for 20ft residential flagpoles. The Premier Kit includes a 3x5 flag. For 25ft poles, upgrade to a 4x6 flag. The general rule: flag length should be approximately 25% of the flagpole height.
Do I need a flagpole light to fly my flag at night?
Yes. U.S. Flag Code Section 6(a) states the flag should only be displayed from sunrise to sunset unless it is "properly illuminated" at night. A solar flagpole light makes 24/7 display legal. Our TelePatriot solar lights mount directly to Phoenix poles — no wiring needed.
